This week in Language Arts we have been prewriting and drafting a poem about where we are from. As I begin to read the student's first drafts I have been so humbled by the things they are choosing to share and what a window this poem is to their soul. It also started me thinking about our classroom; our shared experience therein and how the past weaves with the present and creates the future. I share these pictures because I think they tell more than 1,000 words.... We started in-line skating just before the holidays and due to holiday activities we missed some sessions. Coach Davies heard the cries of the kids so we got 2 extra long sessions! It was one of the funniest yet proudest moments as their teacher to watch their progress. So inspiring!
It was an exciting day in the Clover Classroom. The Piper is unpacked and we started building. The students were so excited and really inspired by the blueprint. Problem-solving, critical thinking, building, playing, learning and so much more. @withpiperAs we were talking about holidays and celebrating different traditions, I explained that I had bought them a very special holiday gift. When I first became a part of this Kickstarter I didn't really know where it would go. All I knew it was building, programming and Minecraft. Winning formula for me.
As a more than middle aged woman it might seem surprising that I saw this and immediately wanted it. It's been a few years since I started working with elementary kids in the realm of coding/programming/making/ building, and I am smitten with how engaged the kids are and how a game based approach to learning is so needed for so many of our young people. As I walk into school on Monday with my Piper in hand, I know I will be bursting with excitement to see my kids get a hold of it! Oh and did I mention BB-8 is coming too! It is hard to believe that today was day 50 of school. I have so enjoyed the last 50 days with your students. Even on days I, or they, are absent I think about how they are doing and how I can best meet their learning needs. It's been a while since I posted a blog so there is lots of things to catch up with! Hopefully the pictures help tell the story of how our learning continues to be fun, active and interactive.
We had an exciting and revelatory time in Economics looking at the intricacies of Supply and Demand. In our 'market' we had some shrewd buyers that were not prepared to tolerate the seller's cost and walk away from the deal. Those paper apples certainly caused some controversy and a rich conversation about the power of brand perceptions. We discussed the recent decision by Whole Foods and gas prices. Through the use of Socrative I was able to capture everyone's thinking. Very enlightening!
