Thankfully there was no drama at my house this morning. I even managed to stop for a coffee and a taco! The children were as eager as ever to get in the room and play with their goalie and kicker. World Cup fever has well and truly set in. We started the morning off with a Graph Programming activity. The children enjoyed it and many were able to replicate the drawings the other students created and programmed. We then settled down for some Scratch time. They had so much fun exploring, creating and re-creating. Their confidence with the program has grown so much and I enjoyed watching them be brave and take risks. After our snack we had a brief WeDo 'soccer match and went for a walk down the 'Death Trail'. The rest of the time was spent on Scratch, Tynker, Khan Academy and... World Cup soccer. Yes... we just HAD to. A great day of learning and cheering. USA, USA, USA.... Tomorrow will be a day of celebrating learning with a pizza party at 11:45am. You are more than welcome to join us. Please complete this form so I know how many people to cater for!

Yeah, so this morning. Yup. Up. Ready. All set to pack up the car. "Where's the car keys?" Tick, tock, tick, tock... 8:45am... FOUND. In the giant toy car drawer. And... I made it to another great day of learning. When I arrived Paula was commanding the show with 7 totally engrossed students. We had a heavy day of Scratch and it WAS wonderful. Enjoy the pics and the videos. Joy, joy, joy! Nothing lifts the spirits like the sight of excited children waiting for you on the second day of camp. Smiling faces, open minds and VOICES! I love how children get quickly comfortable with their surroundings. At times today I felt I had 8 of my own kids in there! It was ALL good ;) We started off with WeDo Lego as promised. They really loved this. If they were not soccer fans before this camp, they certainly will be after. We made kickers and goalies; alligators and other spinning things that might, just might, have got caught in someone's hair. They were ok. GoNoodle remained a favorite although the lure of the WeDo was too much for some. Onward to more activities in code.org and a problem solving session. We finished the day in Scratch. Phew.... I'm tired. Night ;) It was with great joy that I welcomed my first 'Scrampers' to Forest Trail Elementary this morning. I had been battling some illness, so I was thrilled to unload the car and enter the Spark Lounge, complete with sofa, Hokki stools and beanbags. As with the first day of camp, some children were subdued, while others were ready to tell me every detail of every thing EVER! I love the curiosity and ease with which students can adapt to their surroundings and their willingness to, unconditionally, open their minds to new things. We started the day off with a Kahoot. It helped us get to know each other better and set the scene for a fun, game-based week of learning. After the Kahoot we showed them the coding site we were going to use for our introductory activities. We worked through 'The Maze' and 'The Artist'. It was great to see them experiment, take risks and 'play'. After some time spent with this we had a brain break using the GoNoodle. I think I enjoyed it more than them! I am lucky to have the company of Paula McKinney this week. She introduced the class to binary numbers and the students had fun solving riddles and creating some of their own. At the end of the day we had a brief intro to Scratch. There are certainly some experts in the room and we're excited to extend their learning and get them to think about creating more complex scenarios. Tomorrow we will start the day off with WeDo Lego , a personal favorite of mine. After that we will do some 'Unplugged' activities. I am more than thrilled to get this off the ground. Yay! |
