It was with great joy that I welcomed my first 'Scrampers' to Forest Trail Elementary this morning. I had been battling some illness, so I was thrilled to unload the car and enter the Spark Lounge, complete with sofa, Hokki stools and beanbags. As with the first day of camp, some children were subdued, while others were ready to tell me every detail of every thing EVER! I love the curiosity and ease with which students can adapt to their surroundings and their willingness to, unconditionally, open their minds to new things. We started the day off with a Kahoot. It helped us get to know each other better and set the scene for a fun, game-based week of learning. After the Kahoot we showed them the coding site we were going to use for our introductory activities. We worked through 'The Maze' and 'The Artist'. It was great to see them experiment, take risks and 'play'. After some time spent with this we had a brain break using the GoNoodle. I think I enjoyed it more than them! I am lucky to have the company of Paula McKinney this week. She introduced the class to binary numbers and the students had fun solving riddles and creating some of their own. At the end of the day we had a brief intro to Scratch. There are certainly some experts in the room and we're excited to extend their learning and get them to think about creating more complex scenarios. Tomorrow we will start the day off with WeDo Lego , a personal favorite of mine. After that we will do some 'Unplugged' activities. I am more than thrilled to get this off the ground. Yay!
